The Fife Arms offers a calendar of activities to support staff health and wellbeing and has previously organised and sponsored staff participation in sporting events.
Wellbeing goes beyond physical fitness; the People Team plan activities around good nutrition, hydration, mindfulness and social inclusion.
A benefit scheme is in place with Simply Health to claim back expenses associated with medical treatments such as dental and opticians. Some employees, if their role is eligible, will get access to private medical insurance through Vitality.
The Fife Arms has a social fund that is dedicated to being used for staff social activities. The hotel has previously organised food trucks and Oktoberfest as well as trips to Aberdeen for escape rooms and other fun activities. Team members can request the funds for themselves to organise anything from cinema trips to sponsored sport activities. The People Team also uses the fund to organise activities for staff throughout the year, including our annual staff party.
The Fife Arms has a dedicated staff shuttle that runs between the local town, Ballater, and Braemar several times throughout the day. The shuttle is free for staff to use and they can use it to get to and from work and their staff accommodation, to their private accommodation in Ballater, or to connect with local transport services in Ballater. The staff shuttle times are designed to ensure that everyone can get to work and home again on time.
The Fife Arms has a dedicated building that staff can access before, during, and after their shift at work. The welfare area is designed to be comfortable and cosy and contains an exercise bike, yoga mats, a television with Netflix subscription, a Wii console, books, and facilities to make hot drinks such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate and chai lattes.
All hotel staff are entitled to one complimentary meal a day during their shift. This meal is available in the staff canteen and is prepared by the kitchen team. There is also squash and facilities to make hot drinks in the staff canteen, along with the occasional sweet treat from breakfast or pastry colleagues!
Staff can get discounts on rooms, food and beverage and retail. Discount amounts vary depending on outlet and what is being purchased but range from 10-50%. This isn’t just across the hotel, but across the wider Artfarm business.
Driving Lessons
The hotel offera 50% reimbursement of up to 12 hours of driving lessons for all permanent team members.
Gym Memberships
The Fife Arms offers up to 50% reimbursement of the joining fee and monthly memberships with participating local gym and sporting facilities. This includes the local golf courses.
All hotel employees are part of a ‘tronc’ scheme, meaning they get access to a share of tips. National Insurance is not deducted from these tips and adds an extra bit of money to wages at the end of each month.
Live-In
& Save
At The Fife Arms, the staff live-in accommodation is designed to make life simpler, more affordable, and genuinely supportive for the team. With all bills included, such as broadband, utilities, and meals, monthly outgoings are significantly reduced and staff can focus on enjoying life in the Cairngorms. For many team members, this means saving £10,000+ per year compared to a live-out role on the same salary. It’s a rare opportunity to build financial security while living and working in one of Scotland’s most beautiful destinations.
Employee Assistance Programme
Artfarm has a strong relationship with Hospitality Action to offer an Employee Assistance Programme. Through Hospitality Action, employees can access a confidential, 24/7 and free counselling service. In addition, Hospitality Action has plenty of wellbeing resources for employees to access free of charge.
Staff Recognition
Artfarm has a Colleague of the Quarter scheme. Each quarter, an employee from Scotland is chosen and wins a bottle of Champagne and £250 worth of credit to use through the company intranet. In addition, each year one Artfarm Colleague of the Year is selected, and awarded £2000 to use at Artfarm properties globally.
Employees who stay with the Fife Arms for 5 years receive a long-service award dinner, a letter from the owners and bottle of Champagne. The hotel organises a private 3-course dinner with arrival drinks for the colleagues who reach long-service at the same time.
All permanent employees can enjoy a Guest Experience once every 12 months, where they can bring someone with them to stay in the hotel overnight and enjoy a 3-course meal.
