The Artist’s Studio is a rare and immersive room that offers stunning views over the surrounding landscape of the Cairngorms National Park. Inspired by The Bloomsbury Group and the interiors they created at Charleston House, the Artist’s Studio features hand-painted walls throughout and an alcove bed with colourful textiles.
The design of the Artist’s Studio was conceived and art-directed by Neil Wenman, partner at Hauser & Wirth. The room carries many echoes of Charleston, with its hand-painted doors and joinery and cushions by the artist Cressida Bell, granddaughter of Vanessa Bell. The principal element in the space is the built-in box bed flanked by twin wardrobes and painted in the Bloomsbury manner, creating a cosy painted jewel box tucked into the eaves of the attic.
The Artist’s Studio has the atmosphere of a creative hideaway, as if the artist has just stepped out and left the eclectic energy of work in progress. The room is something of an extraordinary watchtower, or an elevated belvedere, looking out across a magical landscape of hills and Munros which change by the hour as well as with the seasons. The desk is positioned by the window to make the most of this elevated view, creating the perfect spot to channel inspiration onto paper or canvas.
