Secret Room

Hidden behind a trompe-l’œil door and discovered by following the path of a special symbol, the Secret Room is dedicated to Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel – who was known for hiding doors behind screens in the hope that her guests might forget to leave – and the inspiration she drew from the Highlands of Scotland. Warm and romantic, the room features a walk-in wardrobe, bar area, and copper bath tucked within an arched niche.

Chanel in the Highlands

Embracing the sporting life of the Highlands, Chanel was said to spend all day catching salmon during their retreats. She borrowed the Duke’s clothes, making his tweeds her own and wearing them with a panache not usually associated with traditional sporting garb. Churchill even wrote appreciatively of Chanel to his wife, ‘She fishes from morn till night, and in two months has killed 50 salmon. She is very agreeable – really a great and strong being, fit to rule a man or an Empire’.
