Festive Highlights

From Hogmanay through to Burns Night, winter in Scotland unfolds as a season of ritual and celebration. These moments anchor the darker months with meaning, offering guests a chance to experience Scotland’s cultural heart at its most expressive.

Throughout December, Braemar also hosts community-led festive moments, including local markets and winter gatherings, adding to the sense of warmth and connection.

Weather

Temperatures typically range from around -5°C to 5°C. Snowfall is common, and frost often lingers for days. The weather can change quickly, so layering and proper winter footwear are essential.

Winter Activities

Winter in Braemar offers a balance of outdoor adventure and fireside comfort. Snowy landscapes invite skiing and winter walks in the surrounding Cairngorms, while clear nights reveal some of Scotland’s darkest skies, with opportunities for stargazing and glimpses of the Northern Lights. Evenings at The Fife Arms slow the pace, with whisky, art and intimate dining providing a warm retreat from the cold.

Spring

MARCH - JUNE

Spring is a rejuvenating time to visit Royal Deeside, immersed in the sights, sounds, and scents of the Highlands as nature begins to reawaken. This is a vibrant time of year when wildlife flourishes, wildflowers bloom, and waterfalls rush with the melting snow.

Spring Highlights

The Fife Arms hosts creative workshops for both adults and children throughout spring, with a focus on reconnecting to the natural world. These have previously included an egg-painting workshop during the school holidays and a clay printing class to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Spring is a season which balances both sunshine and cosiness, with bright days spent outside often followed by chilly nights by the fire, particularly in March. Meanwhile, May is often considered one of the finest months of the year for hill walking.

1 /

Weather

Temperatures typically range from around 0°C to 15°C. Scotland is notorious for fitting all four seasons into a day, and there is no time of year when this is more true than in the spring. The weather changes quickly, so it’s important to pack layers and waterproofs.

1 /

Spring Activities

Wander through ancient Caledonian pinewoods, relax on the riverside, or head on an off-road tour with the Ghillies before returning to the hotel for a delicious meal and dram of whisky.

Summer

JUNE - SEPTEMBER

In the warmest months of the year, the Fife Arms offers an unforgettable summer escape filled with outdoor adventures, inspiring art and exceptional food. The wide blue skies are seemingly endless, with golden eagles and buzzards often soaring overhead.

1 /

Summer Highlights

Explore the breathtaking Cairngorms with Ghillie-guided forest walks, off-road tours and creative pursuits. Families will love magical pony picnics and the hotel’s nature trails, while the tennis courts and rivers offer plenty of opportunities for sport in the fine weather.

Scotland is rewarded for enduring the short days of winter with nearly 18 hours of daylight during the summer months, perfect for long evenings spent dining outdoors or simply revelling in the fresh air.

1 /

Weather

Temperatures usually range from around 10°C to 25°C. Rain is still typical, but so are warm sunny days when sun protection is a must – particularly when spending all day out in the hills. Bringing some midge repellent is also wise, although they are mercifully less bothersome in the Cairngorms than they are on the west coast of Scotland.

1 /

The Braemar Gathering

Summer ends with the famous Braemar Gathering in early September. Known colloquially as ‘The Games’, it has been attended by the monarch every year since the days of Queen Victoria and is a lively event with Highland games, pipers, and dancing.

Autumn

SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER

As summer fades and the Highlands begin to turn golden, the Cairngorms offer a peaceful escape. It’s a time to gather a wrap, head outdoors, and soak in the breathtaking beauty of Scotland in autumn.

1 /

Autumn Highlights

Autumn is festival season at the Fife Arms, with Braemar Literary Festival taking place at the end of September and the Festival of Fashion taking place in November. Colourful gatherings of leading creatives, writers, and thinkers from Scotland and the United Kingdom at large, they’re both key moments in the cultural calendar.

There is no better time to discover the Highlands, as the landscape shifts from golden autumn colours to crisp winter skies. After a day exploring Braemar’s trails and glens, return to the Fife Arms, where roaring fires and a warming dram await.

1 /

Weather

Temperatures usually range from around 0°C to 15°C. The autumn colours are stunning, but the weather can be wet and unpredictable, so waterproofs and good boots are wise if you plan to spend time outdoors exploring the landscape.
